Hello Andy
If you can get online go to the external hard drive manufacturers website you should be able to download drivers for it
If not try plugging it in and restarting the pc and maybe windows update

Have you tried all these options ?
You could take your external h/drive out of it's case/caddy Andy then connect it to the mobo of your new pc, that's of course as long as your external isnt the old IDE connection type. Most new mobo's have done away with the IDE connector, and they also only accept USB2 OR USB3 connection devices nowadays.
Like Shane I also have a docking station that takes both IDE and Sata hard drives, so that's your best option if you want to continue backing up files to your external. Docking stations also cater for USB1 devices as well as USB2/3, and they cater for all types of ssd cards.
thanx guys :-)
